Hello and welcome to this Solid Round Tools Knowledge Session. During this series we will cover features, strategies and products relating to Solid Round Tools. As always we start with safety. Be aware of the safety procedure, exits and assembly point at the place where you are viewing. My name is Ben Lodge and I'm the Solid Round Tools product specialist and today I'm joined by Tony. Hi Ben, I'm Tony Bryan and I work as Solid Round Tools sales driver in the UK. Today we'll be looking into general engineering in the product area of Solid Round Tools. Ben, why don't you talk to us how we define general engineering within Sandvik Coromant? So general engineering, we see this as being a multi-material area where customers will have small or varied batch sizes. So we're looking at customers that may be producing small batches, switching from steel through to stainless and then on to aluminium. Absolutely that, yes. And what type of products would we be offering to general engineering customers Ben? So as we look at our product portfolio within Solid Round Tools, we're split into three areas. So first off we have our versatile area. So here we're looking at one tool for multi -material areas and multi-applications. And then we're looking to our optimised area. So here we've got either material specific or application specific products. So they're really the two main areas that we're looking at. You know, the versatile certainly offers itself to the things that we spoke about, this varied batch sizes, multi-material applications. But also as we're looking optimised, there is some crossovers there as well where we see some products that can really lend itself and give performance advantages to these kind of customers. And then we have our customised solutions as well. So we may have a specific need for a customer and we can satisfy that need with a customised solution. OK, so how do we go about finding the right tool then? So as we look at the application, as we said, it's defining these different areas, you know, making sure that we identify the needs of that application and to get the best out of those tools and make it, you know, match the needs of the customer. OK, so why don't we start by looking at some of our drilling products for general engineering? Absolutely. So as we look at our drilling portfolio, we can see here it's split into our versatile and optimised area. And as we see at the top there, we've got our 460XM, you know, that's our versatile drilling product. And as we move down, we can see we've got our 860GM. So we've got two products there that work on different performance levels but do lend themselves to a general engineering area. As we look at the GM, it has a much higher level when it comes to productivity but also when it comes to tool life as well. And we can see that in applications where we have unstable conditions, the 860GM, you know, works fantastically in that area. So, you know, it really makes a big step change from where we were with the 460XM up to the 860GM. OK, so we have two drills that work well across multi-material applications. Why don't we take a look at the first drill first, Collar Drill 460. Yeah, absolutely. So we can see here, you know, the 460XM high performance in a multi-material application. We've got a really wide range of diameters available, 3 to 20 millimetres in diameter. And we can go up to 8 times D with this product. And it's available both in internal and external coolant. It's got this 140 degree four-facet conical split point. And we can see there we've got hole tolerances between H8 and H9. And this specific geometry as well, the GC34, that we see in our versatile range. So what application areas could we apply to Collar Drill 460? So, you know, 460 works in a lot of application areas. And we can see here, you know, we've got the conventional drilling, but we've also got chamfered holes. You know, the inclined surfaces, we can drill up to a 10 degree incline with the 460. You know, we've got cross holes, stack drilling, and also the convex and concave surfaces as well. Okay. So you touched on the standard size range. What if we have a customer that's looking for an intermediate size, for example, we just need a slightly bigger drill than standard? Yeah. This is where our customised solutions comes in and what we spoke about before. So, you know, we may not have a size available to the customer. And then we can start looking in this area of our tailor-made offer. And we can see here a number of options available to us. Not only, you know, changing the diameter of the drill if we didn't have the size as a standard, but also looking at different ratios when it comes to, you know, double drilling diameters, chamfers, radiuses. So there's a lot of options available to us with the 460 range. Okay. And a customer would be able to access TaylorMadeWeb via our website with the 460 product range? Absolutely. TaylorMadeWeb is available with the 460 range. So they can go on, you know, and put their needs into the system. And it will output a quote for them from our tailor-made web. Really good. Really good. So the Coral Drill 460, you've spoke about the standard size range, where we can use it. What about some technical features of the product? Yep. So as we said, we've got this 140 degree conical split point, which helps aid with the centering of the tool. We've got a really strong parallel web on there for good tool life, give us that stability. We've also got this large flute volume to help with our chip evacuation and help prevent any chip packing that we might have seen. And it also helps to maintain the chip evacuation when we get into full depth. Obviously, as we spoke about, you know, we can go up to 8 times D with this drill with the through coolant. So we need to make sure that we're getting those chips away. Thanks for that information, Ben. Coral Drill 460 sounds really interesting. So moving up a performance level, we have the Coral Drill 860 GM. Why don't you talk to us a little bit about this product? Yeah, no problem. So as we look at the 860 GM, you know, this is our first choice for optimised performance in a multi-material application. As we've said, we're making a step change when it comes to the performance of this product over the 460 XM that we spoke about before, both in productivity, but also in tool life as well. You know, when we look at the range itself, as you can see there, we've got the 3 to 16 millimetres of diameter. And we're replicating up to this 8 times D that we saw before available in external and internal coolant. And again, we're seeing this whole tolerances of H8 to H9. But the difference that we see here is our new grade, the X1BM grade that's come into our portfolio, which is a patented grade that we have for ourselves for this product. OK, so this drill is aimed at the customer that's looking to produce more holes, and they're looking to speed up their production somewhat over Corridor 460. Absolutely, absolutely. And what sort of application areas can this drill be applied in? Exactly the same again. You know, as we saw with the 460, we were replicating that with the 860 GM. So we can see there, you know, the stack drilling, the cross holes, the convex and concave, the incline surfaces as well as the chamfered holes as well and the conventional. So, you know, we're covering pretty much all the bases that we see within the drilling area. And we can see there, you know, the materials that we can perform when it comes to 860 GM. You know, we're covering all the bases with this. And certainly when we're looking at hardened materials, you know, up to 60 Rockwell we can drill with the 860 GM. So we do have a really strong product when it comes to drilling applications. That's great. And in terms of standard assortment, Ben, this drill is available in through coolant and solid as well? Yep, absolutely. So we can see here we've got the single diameter, 3 to 8 times D, available in through coolant and also in external coolant. And we also have some step and chamfer drills available as standard as well. So we have that within our portfolio to offer the customers. Great. And again, I guess this drill will be available via the TaylorMade route for having intermediate sizes? Absolutely. We're seeing this portfolio within TaylorMade expanding all the time. And we will see this product coming into TaylorMade web in the future as well. Really interesting. So what sort of performance advantage could we expect to see over Corridor 460 with 860 GM? I mean, depending on application, you know, it can change. But as an average, we've been looking at between 30 and 40 percent increase in productivity and tool life when we switch from 460 XM up to 860 GM. So we are making that big step change in both areas. Wow. So what sort of technical features does this drill have to enable us to see that performance increase over 460? So as we look at the product itself, we can see here, first off, we've got this optimised double margin, you know, increased stability that we get from that, especially in angled entry and exit holes. One of the things that we found during the testing is the breakthrough on the holes, you know, reduction in the burrs that we see on the back of that. And, you know, that's been a fantastic feature, certainly when we're looking at customer applications. And we'll talk a little bit more about that when we look at some successes that we've had with this product. We then look at the corner reinforcement. So we're protecting this outer corner. And again, another feature helped to reduce these exit burrs and increase the strength on this outer corner in difficult applications. So this corner reinforcement would enable us to run at higher surface speed compared to 460 GM. Absolutely, yeah. It's one of the features that really gives a benefit when we're looking at making that step change with the cutting data. Then we look at our flute reinforcement. So this is a small chamfer on the edge of the flute that helps reduce any breakdown that we might see in difficult applications. And then lastly, we've got the edge preparation that gives us an increased edge line strength for the drill as well. So, you know, it helps us get that tool life advantage that we spoke about previously. As we move on to the point, here we've got the new point thinning type. So this helps lower the cutting forces. We have seen a much lower cutting forces with the 860 GM than we've seen with our other products in the past. And that's down to this thinning that we see on the point. And also we've got our new point geometry, a refined clearance angle on there and an improved surface quality that we see from that. And with corridor 460, corridor 860, these are both self-centering drills. Because we don't need to spot drill before applying the product. Yeah, absolutely. There's no need to spot drill with these products. And then lastly, as we look at some other features, you know, we can see here we've got this flute form. It helps get really good chip evacuation down to these polished flutes that we've got. We've got a really good high core strength that helps reduce the cutting forces as well. And we spoke about this X1BM grade. We can see there the drill. It's on the tip that we coat this drill. It's a multi-layer coating that helps provide an improved productivity and a consistent tool life over the materials. Really impressive, Ben. So do we have any examples of customer experiences with this product? Yep. So as we look at our success case here, we can see here we've got the 860GM. And the change criteria, tool change criteria on this product was down to the size of the burrs on the exit of the hole. And we can see here, you know, we saw a 300% increase in tool life over our competitor, you know, and that's down to the design features that we spoke about. And not only did we get this 300% tool life, we also saw a 12% increase in our productivity as well. So the customer is benefiting, you know, two ways from that. And that's really valuable to the customer. Less tool changes means more machine up time. Absolutely. You know, it's a really good performance from that. And, you know, the customer is really happy that not only they, you know, seeing an increase in tool life, but they're seeing a better product as well. You know, there's no need to get rid of those burrs afterwards. So, you know, they add that ability then to go to this drill and see the benefits of it. Really great. So with both products, 460 and 860GM, what can we do to improve the value to the customer even more? I mean, one way is reconditioning. You know, as a company, you know, we have a reconditioning service. And we offer 100% reliability on our reconditioning. And that's up to three regrinds as well. So we're giving original performance up to three regrinds. And that's, you know, a fantastic service that we're offering there. And we can see savings of up to 50% when we look at a reconditioning service like that. That's really reassuring to a customer. So we would recondition a tool three times and guarantee 100% performance. Absolutely. Fantastic. So how does a customer access that service? So from a customer point of view, you know, they pack the drills into the boxes. We do have boxes that we can provide when it comes to our reconditioning. They can then contact the local sales office to tell them that the reconditioning is available. And after the inspection and, you know, the reconditioning center has received it, they will then let the customer know which drills we're able to recondition. Obviously, some occasions, there may be some products that we're unable to recondition due to quite the damage for whatever reason. And we'll send those back to the customer if we're unable to do so. But we'll then go into the reconditioning center and then they're reconditioned. As an ambition, we look at a two to three week lead time on our reconditioning. And then the reconditioned products are then returned to the customer directly from the center. That's a really great service, Ben. Thank you. So we've drilled holes in our components across multi-materials. Let's talk about our tapping range. Yeah, so now we're looking at our Corotap XM. So as we spoke about 460XM in our versatile range, we're now going to talk about the Corotap XM. And, you know, we have three products available within our Corotap XM range. And these are basically the same product, but with different features when it comes to the coating. Okay, so we have a bright, a steam-tempered, and then we have a coated product as well. So, you know, we've got lots of choices available to us. But our first choice would probably be our coated version, the C110. Of course. So you spoke about three different coatings, the steam-tempered, the bright, and the coated. In which material groups would we apply those taps? So when we look at the uncoated, you know, this is where we'd be looking at the softer materials, as we can see there. And then as we look into the steam-tempered, this is where we're looking at materials where we might see problems when it comes to a built-up edge. So we'd try and use that product then. And then lastly, you know, the C110, this gives us our highest performance. As we saw with it, this is like our 860GM of the tapping portfolio. Higher performance, higher tool life. Okay. So where would we apply these tools? So we're looking at through and blind hole applications, two and a half times D predominantly. We also have taps available with short leads as well. So if there is a short clearance in a blind hole, we have an e-lead, as we call it. And we can actually thread up to 350 Harness Bunnell with these products as well. And, you know, they're suitable for all industry segments. I know we spoke about general engineering, but they really do work in a wide range of material groups. Okay. And also in the metric product portfolio, we also offer an oversized tap of 6G tolerance? Yes, we do. Yeah. So, you know, this is our biggest portfolio when it comes to tapping, certainly with the XM. We can see here, you know, a massive portfolio up to M64 we go with our metric taps. So we've got a really large range, not only in metric, but also in imperial tap sizes as well. Okay, Ben. So I think that covers the multi-application tapping range. So let's look at milling for a second. And I think we have a really exciting product when it comes to multi-application milling product. Yeah, certainly. You know, we've got our Plura HD, the heavy duty product within our portfolio. And it actually doesn't sit within our versatile range. This is a product that we see certainly for general engineering within our optimized portfolio. The HD, you know, heavy duty milling, that's what it's all about with this product. And it's designed around making sure we've got a robust product in place for really difficult applications. Okay, Ben. So in terms of application area, you spoke about this being a heavy duty cutter. So we can full slot, we can ramp, we can shoulder mill. Absolutely. Yeah, full slot in, we can go up to 2 times D full slot in with this product. Shoulder milling, up to 70% engagement when it comes to shoulder milling. And ramping, you know, helically ramping. We have a maximum ramp angle of around 5 degrees with this product. So yeah, we're covering all bases certainly when it comes to the Plura HD. As you say, this is not a multi-application product, but it's certainly a versatile product. Yeah, absolutely. You know, it works in a number of material groups. You know, we have two different cutters. We have an ISO-P cutter that has a secondary material when it comes to ISO-K. Then we have an ISO-M cutter that has a secondary material when it comes to ISO-S. So, you know, we can use these products and it lends itself to these different materials in a lot of different applications. And if the customer has the functionality, we can offer through-coolant? Yeah, absolutely. We've got through-coolant that's available within our ISO-M cutter range. So yeah, we've got that covered as well. Sounds like a really good cutter, Ben. Have we got any customer examples? Yeah, absolutely. So here we've got some examples when it comes to the Plura HD. And this was a customer in a number of components. So, you know, we can see there that we've seen a big step change when it comes to the tool life with this product. And on average, over the three components, we saw a 253% increase in tool life over our competitors. So, you know, it was a fantastic result that we saw with the Plura HD. That's really impressive. So what technical features does the Cut have to enable us to meet these performance levels? So as we look at the Plura HD, you know, we've got our differential pitch that's helped it minimise any vibration that we have from the application. That's really important, certainly when we're looking at these heavy engagements that we're talking about. We've got the face geometry that's developed to cope with the demanding applications. As well as this optimised flute, you know, we spoke about the large engagement that we've got with this product. And we've had to optimise our flute design to make sure we can get the chip evacuation really good. And we saw that in some of the other sessions that we've done, certainly around pocketing and slotting, where, you know, this flute geometry really works well to get the chips away from the cutting edge. So we can see there that we've got two different grades, 1734 steel application, 1740 for stainless? Yes. And we also see a little design change in there. So we've got specific edge preparations between the two material types, the two grades that are available to us. So we're getting the best out of the tool when it comes to the different applications. OK, thank you. And what's the product range? So with this assortment in the ISO P area, we're looking at 2 to 25 millimetres in diameter. And when it comes to the ISO M, the one with through coolant, we're looking at 6 to 25 millimetres in diameter. And we also have our imperial range available as well. And they go up to the three quarters of an inch. And we have a multiple assortment of corner radiuses in each diameter. Absolutely.
